Saint-Moïse, Quebec: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Saint-Moïse is a Matapédia Valley parish municipality in Quebec’s Bas-Saint-Laurent region, on high ground between the St. Lawrence drainage and the Baie-des-Chaleurs watershed. The village is small, but its story is concrete: pioneer farms, a chapel request, parish organization, rural services and a landscape of lakes, forest and working agriculture.

How Saint-Moïse Started

The official municipal history traces the first permanent steps to the 1850s and 1860s. Malcolm Fraser arrived on the future territory in 1855, and Georges St-Amand, Ephrem Harvey and Étienne Gagné followed in 1868. By January 1869, 51 families were asking for permission to build a chapel.

The Diocese of Rimouski authorized the chapel in March 1870. Saint-Moïse was canonically erected on April 1, 1873, with a sacristy, presbytery and fabrique forming the centre of the new community. The parish municipality was founded in 1877.

The name honours abbé Moïse Duguay, an archpriest of Rimouski and first curé of Sainte-Flavie, where many Matapédia pioneers had roots. Forestry shaped the early economy, while agriculture and livestock later became central.

What Saint-Moïse Is Like Today

Saint-Moïse had 542 residents in the 2021 census. The village remains rural and service-oriented, with the municipal office on rue Principale, an elementary school, childcare, Canada Post service and a CLSC point of service that operates by appointment.

The visitor feel is quiet and high-valley. Rather than a built attraction strip, Saint-Moïse offers a small settlement pattern, a parish history visible in local institutions, and outdoor context tied to forest, lakes, hunting, fishing and winter roads.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Start with the village history. The municipal timeline gives enough detail to understand how chapel, parish, school and municipal life formed the local core. The 150th anniversary material also points to community memory, family albums and the library’s role in preserving local stories.

Saint-Moïse participates in intermunicipal recreation with Saint-Noël and Saint-Damase. Check the loisirs page for current programs before counting on an activity. The school, library and community spaces are resident services first, but they help visitors understand the scale of the village.

For outdoor planning, use Saint-Moïse as a quiet Matapédia Valley stop rather than as an access claim to every surrounding lake. Public access, hunting seasons, fishing rules and winter conditions should be checked with official or posted information.

Travel Notes

Use the municipal contact page for office hours and service addresses before arrival. The CLSC point of service is appointment-based, and the school and childcare are not visitor attractions. Rural driving can change quickly with snow, thaw and fog on higher ground. For fishing, hunting, snowmobile or lake plans, confirm legal access and seasonal rules first.
