Wabakimi Provincial Park | Ontario

Wabakimi Provincial Park is a vast wilderness park northwest of Thunder Bay, known for remote canoe routes, whitewater, fishing, fly-in lodges, wildlife, and cultural history. Ontario Parks lists Wabakimi at 892,940 hectares, established in 1983, and classifies it as a wilderness park.

This is not a casual campground park. Wabakimi is for visitors who are prepared for remote travel, backcountry registration, route planning, aviation or rail logistics in some cases, and self-reliant decision-making.

Why Visit Wabakimi Provincial Park

Wabakimi is one of Ontario's major wilderness canoeing destinations. Ontario Parks highlights more than 1,500 km of lake and river routes, including whitewater, plus opportunities for wildlife viewing and sport fishing.

The park is also known for walleye and northern pike fishing, fly-in backcountry lodges and resorts, and a long cultural history connected to several Indigenous communities whose traditional areas include lands within and around Wabakimi.

Things To Do

Plan around backcountry canoeing, whitewater routes, remote fishing, fly-in lodge stays, wildlife viewing, wilderness camping, route research, map work, and longer expedition-style travel. The park is open year-round, but seasonal access and conditions will strongly shape what is realistic.

Because Wabakimi is remote, visitors should avoid treating it like a drive-in day park. Emergency planning, route communication, permits, weather, fire conditions, and travel skills matter.

Planning Notes

Ontario Parks lists Wabakimi backcountry camping as available from January 1 to December 31, 2026. Confirm backcountry registration, access logistics, maps, alerts, fire conditions, fishing rules, outfitter or lodge arrangements, and park rules through the official Ontario Parks source before travelling.
