Upper Madawaska River Provincial Park is a 1,085 hectare waterway park established in 1989. Ontario Parks places it 2 kilometres north of Whitney along Highway 60.
The official page says the park is made up of Crown land in Airy and Murchison townships and follows river boundaries where private land sits beside the park before returning to a 200 metre high-water-mark boundary.
Upper Madawaska River is useful for visitors researching a recreation-rich river corridor near the Algonquin area. Ontario Parks lists canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and cross-country skiing.
The official page also notes mixed hardwood, speckled alder, winterberry, holly and shrubs, and white birch among species found in the park. That gives the waterway more than a paddling-only identity.
The caution is equally important: Ontario Parks says there are no client services in the park at this time. Information about the park and its water routes can be found at the East Gate of Algonquin Provincial Park.
The river corridor also sits near a busy travel route, which can make it easy to underestimate the need for self-sufficient planning. Treat each activity as a separate permit and safety question before departure.
Plan around canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting where permitted, hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, river-route research, vegetation observation, and checking Algonquin East Gate information.
Confirm access, water routes, no-client-service limitations, permits, camping rules, fishing and hunting regulations, maps, weather, alerts, and emergency planning through Ontario Parks.
