Thackeray Provincial Park | Ontario

Thackeray Provincial Park is a 116 hectare nature reserve established in 1985. Ontario Parks places it 30 kilometres north of Kirkland Lake.

The official page says the reserve protects a significant sequence of Archean metavolcanic rocks of the Kenojevis Group in the central portion of the Abitibi subprovince of the Canadian Shield.

Why Visit Thackeray Provincial Park

Thackeray is a geology-focused reserve with unusually clear bedrock exposure. Ontario Parks describes several hundred metres of tholeiitic basalt of varying composition and textures.

The official page notes composition ranging from grey-to-green magnesium-rich tholeiite basalt to black-to-dark green iron-rich basalt. Textures include fine-grained, massive, pillowed and pillowed-breccia flows, thin fragmental glass tuffs, and other distinct zones.

Ontario Parks says the reserve is managed to protect significant bedrock outcroppings. There are no visitor facilities. Scientific research and educational activities are encouraged, but anyone wishing to conduct research must obtain an approved research application.

The details are technical, so visitors should expect the park to reward preparation more than casual sightseeing. A good plan starts with maps and official research rules.

That keeps expectations aligned with the reserve purpose.

Things To Do

Plan around geology study, educational use, map review, responsible photography, Canadian Shield context, learning about basalt textures, and research planning through approved channels where required.

Avoid rock disturbance or informal collecting; the protected outcrops are the reason the reserve exists.

Planning Notes

Confirm access, research-application requirements, no-facility limitations, bedrock protection rules, maps, alerts, road conditions, weather, communications, and emergency planning through Ontario Parks before travelling.
