Temagami River Provincial Park | Ontario

Temagami River Provincial Park is a 3,394 hectare waterway park established in 2000. Ontario Parks describes it as a 30 kilometre long waterway known for novice to advanced whitewater paddling opportunities.

The official page says part of Red Cedar Lake and all of Thistle Lake, also known as Island Lake, are within the park. It places the park about 40 kilometres northeast of Sudbury and 60 kilometres north of North Bay.

Why Visit Temagami River Provincial Park

Temagami River is a focused paddling park for people researching whitewater options across a range of skill levels. The official description covers novice to advanced opportunities, so route selection should be based on current water, group ability, and how much whitewater the party actually wants.

The inclusion of Red Cedar Lake and Thistle Lake broadens the planning picture beyond a single river channel. Paddlers should check where lake travel, river sections, put-ins, take-outs, and land boundaries apply.

Because the boundary includes lands and waters in McCallum, McWilliams, and Thistle townships, maps matter more than a simple destination pin.

The broad skill range is useful, but it also means one party's easy section may be another party's hard day on the river.

Skill matching should happen before launch.

Things To Do

Plan around whitewater paddling, route scouting, lake-and-river travel, map review, skill matching, fishing if regulations allow, shoreline observation, and conservative turnaround planning.

Planning Notes

Confirm access, water levels, rapid difficulty, maps, permits, portages, weather, alerts, fishing regulations, communications, and emergency planning through Ontario Parks before travelling.
