Peter's Woods Provincial Park is a 349 hectare nature reserve in Northumberland County, about 20 kilometres northeast of Cobourg. Ontario Parks lists the park as established in 1976.
The reserve sits on the sandy, north-facing slope of the Oak Ridges Moraine. Steep-sided valleys have been cut into this northern slope by surface runoff, springs, and the headwater streams of Mill Creek.
Peter's Woods is a strong page for visitors looking for a protected Oak Ridges Moraine forest walk with clear low-impact rules. Deciduous forests of sugar maple, beech, and red oak dominate slopes and well-drained uplands, along with deciduous-evergreen forest containing hemlock and white pine.
Poorly drained wetlands support white cedar forest, with local concentrations of red ash, white birch, and other trees. Ontario Parks also notes areas of land previously used for agriculture.
Unlike many small nature reserves, Peter's Woods has minimal visitor facilities: a parking lot, trail, and vault privies. Visitors are requested to stay on foot trails to prevent vegetation trampling and soil compaction. Unauthorized collection of natural objects is prohibited, and research requires an approved application.
Those rules make the trail system the appropriate way to experience the moraine slopes and valleys.
Plan around trail walking, Oak Ridges Moraine landform context, forest and wetland observation, Mill Creek headwater awareness, low-impact photography, and careful nature appreciation.
