Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park is a day-use nature reserve north of Lake Superior, known for dramatic canyon lookouts, a short trail-and-boardwalk route, sheer cliffs, and rare Arctic plant habitat. Ontario Parks lists the park at 777.02 hectares, established in 1972.
This is not a camping park. Visitors come for a focused stop: walk to the lookout platforms, take in the canyon, and treat the fragile canyon environment with care.
Ontario Parks highlights panoramic views of a 150 metre wide gorge and sheer cliffs that drop 100 metres straight down to the canyon floor. A trail and boardwalk connect two lookout platforms with views across the canyon.
The park is also ecologically unusual. Ontario Parks notes that Arctic plants, usually found 1,000 kilometres north, survive in the unique environment at the bottom of the canyon. That makes the visit both scenic and educational, especially for travellers exploring the Thunder Bay and north shore region.
The short day-use format makes Ouimet Canyon easy to pair with a larger Lake Superior itinerary.
Plan around day-use sightseeing, the boardwalk and lookout platforms, canyon photography, short hikes, learning about Arctic plants and canyon ecology, picnics where permitted, and pairing the stop with other Lake Superior north shore parks.
Ontario Parks lists Ouimet Canyon day use from May 15 to October 30, 2026. Confirm day-use access, road and trail conditions, lookout access, weather, ecological protection guidance, alerts, facility hours, and park rules through the official Ontario Parks source before travelling.
