Otoskwin-Attawapiskat River Provincial Park | Ontario

Otoskwin-Attawapiskat River Provincial Park is an 82,529 hectare waterway park about 380 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, 275 kilometres north of Geraldton, 250 kilometres northeast of Sioux Lookout, and 60 kilometres northeast of Pickle Lake. Ontario Parks lists the park as established in 1989.

The official page says these rivers were once part of a major fur-trading route and merge into a delta here. That delta contains significant brackish tidal marshes.

Why Visit Otoskwin-Attawapiskat River Provincial Park

This park is a serious northern waterway page for paddlers researching remote backcountry canoeing, camping, whitewater skill requirements, and cultural history. Ontario Parks notes historical sites ranging from ancient Indigenous communities dating back to 3000 BC to fur-trading sites from the beginning of the 1800s.

The visitor expectations are clear. Ontario Parks says the park has no facilities for visitors, but it provides opportunities for backcountry canoeing and camping. Visitors should be equipped with wilderness and white-water skills.

That means the page should not soften the logistics. Access, river conditions, route length, skills, emergency communication, and current official information should define the trip before any itinerary is built.

The mix of brackish marsh, fur-trade history, and ancient Indigenous community sites gives the waterway a rare cultural and ecological combination.
