MacMurchy Township End Moraine Provincial Park | Ontario

MacMurchy Township End Moraine Provincial Park is a 239 hectare nature reserve approximately 45 kilometres east of Gogama and 28 kilometres west of Gowganda. Ontario Parks lists the park as established in 2002 and describes it as a very small, low-relief area of broken end moraine.

The park's official identity is geological and ecological. Bedrock exposures include pillowed dacite to andesite lava flows and tuffs of the Cabot-Calvin supracrustal assemblage, part of the south central Abitibi Subprovince in the Archean Superior Province.

Why Visit MacMurchy Township End Moraine Provincial Park

This is a specialized nature reserve for people researching end moraines, Abitibi bedrock, and northern Ontario landform-vegetation patterns. Ontario Parks describes weakly broken end moraine covered with sparse mixed coniferous forest, mixed deciduous forest, dense conifer forest, and wetlands.

The official page also lists six ecosites: one major poor coniferous site, four modest sites covering open wetland, intolerant hardwoods, intolerant hardwoods-conifers, and moderate conifers, plus one small brush and alder site.

There are no visitor facilities available, so the park should be approached as a protected landscape for research and low-impact nature appreciation rather than a serviced stop.

Its small size also means visitors should avoid assuming there is room for casual recreation beyond activities permitted by current Ontario Parks guidance.

Things To Do

Plan around geology research, end moraine context, Abitibi Subprovince bedrock study, forest and wetland ecosite awareness, map review, photography from appropriate areas, and nearby service planning.
