Lake of the Woods Provincial Park is a natural environment park about 43 kilometres north of Rainy River near the borders of Ontario, Manitoba, and Minnesota. Ontario Parks lists the park at 20,675 hectares, established in 1967.
The official route note says to take Highway 621 north from Highway 11.
The park sits in a transition zone where three natural environments meet: northern, southern, and prairie. Ontario Parks describes a forest mix where southern hardwoods such as elm, ash, and basswood grow beside Manitoba maples, northern spruce, and jack pine.
The birdlife reflects the same overlap. Pelicans have colonized several remote islands and waterways as permanent nesting grounds. Ontario Parks also names Yellow-headed Blackbird and Western Meadowlark, both prairie birds, along with Scarlet Tanager, Red-headed Woodpecker, and Baltimore Oriole, species usually found farther south.
That makes Lake of the Woods a strong long-tail page for habitat transition, birding, remote island nesting, and border-region natural environment searches.
Its border-region position also makes route choice important. Highway 621 access, remote islands, and nesting areas should be checked against current maps and seasonal conditions.
Plan around birding, pelican nesting awareness, forest transition learning, prairie and southern bird context, map review, lake and island research, photography from respectful distances, and nearby Rainy River or Kenora services.
Confirm access, maps, facilities, bird nesting guidance, island or water travel conditions, seasonal wildlife timing, alerts, weather, road conditions, and park rules through the official Ontario Parks source before travelling.
