Gem Lake Maple Bedrock Provincial Park | Ontario

Gem Lake Maple Bedrock Provincial Park is a nature reserve east of Kirkland Lake. Ontario Parks lists the park at 90 hectares, established in 2002.

The official location places it about 40 kilometres east of Kirkland Lake, 15.6 kilometres northwest of Virginiatown, and 17 kilometres northeast of Larder Lake. Ontario Parks says there are no visitor facilities.

Why Visit Gem Lake Maple Bedrock Provincial Park

The park is a compact but information-rich geology reserve. Ontario Parks places it within the western Abitibi Subprovince of the Archean Superior Province.

Its bedrock includes massive and pillowed meta-basalt flows and part of the large Crosby Lake hornblende gabbro sill, components of the Kinojevis South supracrustal assemblage of the Abitibi greenstone belt.

The landform and vegetation context is also specific. Ontario Parks identifies four landform-vegetation types, including dominant medium-aged red and silver maple, poplar, open muskeg on weakly broken bedrock, and exposed bedrock.

Moose and white-tailed deer wintering, calving, and feeding habitat, as well as warm-water fisheries habitat in Crosby and Monocle lakes, exist in the immediate surrounding area.

Because the official page lists no physical address and no visitor facilities, Gem Lake Maple Bedrock should be framed as a protected geology and habitat reference point. Nearby community names help with orientation, but they do not replace access verification.

Things To Do

Plan around official research, Abitibi greenstone belt geology, maple and poplar bedrock forest context, muskeg awareness, wildlife habitat learning, map review, and nearby serviced communities for practical trip needs.

Planning Notes

Confirm access, maps, no-facility expectations, sensitive nature reserve guidance, nearby habitat considerations, alerts, seasonal conditions, weather, and park rules through the official Ontario Parks source before travelling.
