Englehart River Fine Sand Plain and Waterway Provincial Park | Ontario

Englehart River Fine Sand Plain and Waterway Provincial Park is a waterway park about 48 kilometres southwest of Kirkland Lake and 20 kilometres west of Englehart. Ontario Parks lists the park at 4,041 hectares, established in 2002.

There are no visitor facilities available, so the park should be planned as a self-contained waterway and route-research destination.

Why Visit Englehart River Fine Sand Plain and Waterway Provincial Park

The official page gives the park unusually strong geology. Ontario Parks places it within the western Abitibi Subprovince in the Archean Superior Province. For much of its southeastward flow through the park, the Englehart River follows the surface trace of the Cross Lake Fault.

That fault matters because the northeast-facing Cross Lake Fault escarpment forms the southwest boundary of the Lake Timiskaming Rift Valley, a fault-bounded structural and topographical trough.

The park also supports coniferous and intolerant hardwood species, with pockets of mixed pine, jack pine, and other conifers along the waterway. Ontario Parks lists fish species including walleye, lake trout, lake herring, pike, ling, brown bullhead, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and white sucker.

The park protects part of the Englehart River canoe route, beginning at the Englehart River Bridge on Highway 66 at the north end of the park.

Things To Do

Plan around canoe route research, fault valley geology, fishing rule checks, waterway travel, forest and river observation, map review, and nearby Englehart or Kirkland Lake services.

Planning Notes
