Black Sturgeon River Provincial Park | Ontario

Black Sturgeon River Provincial Park is a large waterway park northwest of Nipigon. Ontario Parks lists the park at 23,531 hectares, established in 2002.

The park is part of the Lake Nipigon Basin Signature Site and follows the Black Sturgeon River landscape from near Lake Nipigon toward Black Bay on Lake Superior.

Its long river corridor means access choice can change the trip completely.

Plan accordingly.

Why Visit Black Sturgeon River Provincial Park

Ontario Parks identifies Black Sturgeon River as an important recreational waterway for fishing, hunting, and canoeing. The rugged landscape includes a glacial spillway and cuestas, giving the park a strong geology and river-corridor identity.

The official page also notes day-use opportunities for angling on many lakes and rivers, paddling along the full length of the park, and especially the reach between the former Split Rapids Dam and Nonwatin Lake. Beach areas support family picnics and swimming.

Black Sturgeon River is also not only a summer page. Ontario Parks says the park provides winter opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Things To Do

Plan around canoeing, angling, hunting where permitted, paddling the river corridor, beach picnics, swimming, glacial spillway and cuesta scenery, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and route research near Nipigon.

Planning Notes

Ontario Parks says the park stretches roughly 72 kilometres northerly along the Black Sturgeon River.
