How Dunville Started
Library and Archives Canada’s Dunville community history places the settlement along an eight-kilometre stretch of the North East Arm of Placentia Harbour. The older name North East Arm describes the geography directly: a protected inland arm connected to Placentia Bay, with wooded hills, islands, shallow places and a harbour used by early fishers.
The same history points to the North East River as a major local feature and notes early grants and settlement activity along the arm. The later Dunville name grew from Dunphy’s Village, one part of North East Placentia, as local families, roads, school life and services gave the shoreline community a more settled identity.
Dunville later became an incorporated town before amalgamating into Placentia in 1991, along with other nearby communities. That municipal change is why the page should be understood through Placentia today.
