Vuntut National Park | Yukon

Vuntut National Park is a remote northern Yukon park connected to Arctic wilderness, the Vuntut Gwitchin, Old Crow Flats, and the Porcupine caribou herd. Parks Canada describes it as remote and unspoiled, with First Nations history dating back millennia and one of the planet's great animal migrations.

This is not a casual frontcountry park. Parks Canada lists Vuntut as approximately 50 km by air or 190 km by river north of Old Crow, so access, self-reliance, skills, and safety planning define the trip.

Why Visit Vuntut for River Access, Lake Access & Wildlife

Vuntut is important for travellers who want to understand northern Yukon landscapes through both ecology and culture. Old Crow Flats, also known as Van Tat, is a vast wetland complex of shallow lakes and streams that remains important to the Vuntut Gwitchin for subsistence hunting and other traditional practices.

The Porcupine caribou herd is central to the story of the park and to the culture and way of life of the Vuntut Gwitchin. The John Tizya Centre in Old Crow is an important interpretive stop for learning about elders' stories, traditional tools, caribou, and ancient Beringian landscapes.

Things To Do: River Access & Lake Access

Plan around learning in Old Crow, visiting the John Tizya Centre, understanding Old Crow Flats, Arctic wilderness travel, cultural interpretation, wildlife and caribou learning, and carefully prepared remote adventure. Parks Canada keeps current links for activities, how to get there, facilities and services, park regulations, maps, safety, culture and history, nature and science, and cooperative management.

Because the park is remote, visitors must be self-reliant and have the equipment and skills to travel safely in isolated Arctic conditions.
