Ivvavik National Park | Yukon

Ivvavik National Park is a remote Arctic national park in northern Yukon. Parks Canada explains that Ivvavik means "a place for giving birth, a nursery" in Inuvialuktun and that it was the first national park in Canada created as a result of an Indigenous land claim agreement, the Inuvialuit Final Agreement of 1984.

The park protects part of the Porcupine caribou herd calving grounds and represents the Northern Yukon and Mackenzie Delta natural regions. It is a major wilderness destination, but it is not a casual drive-up park.

Why Visit Ivvavik for Heritage & Trails

Ivvavik is for travellers who want an Arctic experience shaped by Inuvialuit hosts, tundra and mountain wilderness, wildlife, open-country hiking, and river travel. Parks Canada highlights Ivvavik Base Camp, hiking, and Firth River trips as central experiences.

The park is also important for people interested in Indigenous-led conservation stories and northern ecology. The connection between the park, the Inuvialuit Final Agreement, and the Porcupine caribou herd makes the destination significant beyond scenery.

Things To Do: Trails

Plan around Ivvavik Base Camp, guided cultural experiences, Arctic hiking, Firth River rafting, photography, fishing where permitted, winter travel for properly prepared visitors, wildlife learning, and regional birding. Parks Canada keeps current links for fees, activities, important bulletins, safety, water safety, wildlife, hazards, photography and filming, research, and culture and history.

Because of the remoteness, visitor safety planning is a primary part of the trip. Recreational drones are prohibited in the park.
