How Southey Started
The Southey area opened to settlement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries after ranching, homesteading, and railway movement changed the district. H.B. Chandler, one of the early settlers, filed on land south of the present townsite in 1903.
When the railway arrived, Chandler asked that the site be named Southey after Robert Southey, the English poet, historian, biographer, and translator. The town’s official history notes that the literary theme continued in street names such as Keats, Browning, Burns, Byron, and Coleridge.
The town grew quickly between 1905 and 1912, with stores, a school, banks, elevators, barber shop, hardware and implement dealers, restaurants, a lumber yard, telephone system, sidewalks, and fire brigades. Southey incorporated in January 1908.
