Eastern Townships Tourism traces Stukely-Sud’s settlement to New England Loyalists at the end of the 18th century. In the early 19th century, francophones from crowded St. Lawrence Valley parishes and veterans of the War of 1812 also cleared farms in the area.
The name Stukely recalls a village in Huntingdonshire, England. The local story is also tied to stagecoach travel, especially Chemin de la Diligence. Residents are sometimes called Diligents and Diligentes, a name that keeps that transportation history alive. The village municipality was formally constituted in 1935, but the settlement story is older than the municipal date.

Stukely-Sud had 1,142 residents in the 2021 census. Today it feels like a compact rural village set among fields, wooded land and routes leading toward Eastman, Waterloo and Mont Orford. Route 112 brings through-traffic, but the community’s identity is quieter than the main road suggests.
Heritage buildings are part of the present-day landscape. Eastern Townships Tourism notes three churches from the 19th century: St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, the United Church building that later became Catholic, and an Adventist church identified as the oldest Adventist church in Eastern Canada.
