Sainte-Thècle, Quebec: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Sainte-Thècle is a Mauricie municipality in Quebec, located in the Mauricie region of Mékinac. It is a lake-and-village community where parish history, Lac Croche, public parks, and local recreation give travellers more to work with than the population size might suggest.

The best visit stays close to the village and its official public places. Sainte-Thècle has a clear local centre, a documented history, and several named facilities around Lac Croche and the church area.

How Sainte-Thècle Started

Sainte-Thècle’s municipal history records the inauguration of its chapel in 1877, followed by the parish school commission in 1878 and the first post office in 1879. By that point the parish had a chapel, presbytery, forge, sawmill, general store, shoemaker, and post office, giving the settlement the practical institutions it needed to grow.

The railway marked another turning point. In 1886, construction of the Basses-Laurentides railway helped break Sainte-Thècle’s isolation, and by about 1889 a station village began to develop. The village was erected as a municipality on April 27, 1909. In 1989, the village and parish municipalities merged into one municipality.

What Sainte-Thècle Is Like Today

Sainte-Thècle had 2,415 residents in the 2021 census. It remains a service and recreation community for part of Mékinac, with a village core, public parks, water access, and a strong memory of its parish, railway, and local sports history.

The municipality’s own visitor pages give the place a practical identity: bakery, church and calvary, municipal beach, vineyard, sugar shack, skating trails, parks, sports fields, lake access, and village green spaces. That mix makes Sainte-Thècle feel more complete than many small stops, especially in summer and winter recreation seasons.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Parc Saint-Jean-Optimiste is the central outdoor anchor. The municipality places it in the heart of the village beside Lac Croche, with a municipal beach, supervised swimming when available, splash pad, play modules, picnic area, washrooms, sports facilities, and a boat launch. In winter, the same area can support skating-trail activity when conditions allow.

The village also has the Centre des loisirs Éric Bédard, Promenade Laurent-Naud, Place Gérald-Baril, Place Lucien-Lafrance, the church and calvary, and local food or agritourism stops listed by the municipality. Check hours and seasonal status before building a day around any one place.

Travel Notes

Sainte-Thècle is easiest to visit by car. Confirm beach supervision, water access, skating-trail conditions, park facilities, and business hours before arrival. Summer lake use and winter recreation depend on weather, staffing, and municipal notices.

Use official public access points for Lac Croche and other water bodies. The village has enough local stops for a relaxed half-day, but food, lodging, and winter plans should still be checked in advance.
