Saint-Magloire, Quebec: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Saint-Magloire is a highland municipality in Quebec’s Chaudière-Appalaches region, in Les Etchemins between farm country, forest roads and Appalachian ridges. The community is tied to Lac Saint-Laurent, the Noire and Aux Orignaux rivers, agricultural life and nearby trail country.

For travellers, Saint-Magloire works as a quiet Etchemins stop with a village core, local services, outdoor routes and a real settlement story. The page should point to those details instead of repeating a generic list of lakes.

How Saint-Magloire Started

Official place-name records describe Saint-Magloire as a municipality implanted in the highlands of Bellechasse, in the eastern part of the former Roux township. The territory was cleared from the second half of the 19th century, then served as a mission in 1863 before the parish of Saint-Magloire was canonically and civilly erected in 1903.

The name honours abbé Joseph-Magloire Rioux, first curé of Buckland and the first priest serving the local mission from 1863 to 1872. The same record gives a more practical reason for settlement: abbé Narcisse Beaubien of Saint-Raphaël encouraged young people to settle there to reduce migration to the United States, and he celebrated the first Mass on November 11, 1860. Pioneers came from Saint-Charles, Saint-Lazare, Buckland and Saints-Gervais-et-Protais.

What Saint-Magloire Is Like Today

Saint-Magloire had 712 residents in the 2021 census. Its old agricultural and forestry base still matters, but today’s visitor identity is also tied to Etchemins outdoor travel, snowmobile routes, Mont Bonnet, Lac Saint-Laurent and village services.

The community feels more upland than coastal. Roads rise and bend through fields, woods and lake country, and trip planning should account for weather, shoulder-season conditions and the distance to larger service centres.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Start with the village and Lac Saint-Laurent area, then add a public outdoor stop. Tourisme Etchemins lists the Mont Bonnet route in Saint-Magloire as a mountain trail of about 3 km with views over Saint-Magloire and surrounding municipalities.

In winter, Etchemins snowmobile information places Saint-Magloire in a region known for high snow conditions, viewpoints and trail-linked services. Confirm local routes, club status and weather before building the day around motorized recreation.

For a wider outdoor plan, keep Massif du Sud and other Etchemins stops secondary to Saint-Magloire’s own village, lake and trail context. The goal is to understand the municipality, not simply pass through it on the way to a larger park.
