Saint-Ludger is a rural municipality in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, close to the Beauce edge and the upper Chaudière River country. It is a practical stop for parish history, local parks, family recreation and a slower drive through farms, forest and river roads.
How Saint-Ludger Started
The municipal history says the first settlers arrived around 1883. The mission of Saint-Ludger de Risborough was officially delimited by Cardinal Taschereau, then the community became a civil parish in 1896 and a municipality in 1898. Canonical parish status came later, in 1932.
Saint-Ludger also has an unusual municipal story. Its parish territory was divided among Gayhurst-Partie-Sud-Est, the Village of Saint-Ludger and Risborough Partie Sud-Est before the three were joined into the current municipality. The 1998 amalgamation restored municipal boundaries that better matched the older parish identity.
What Saint-Ludger Is Like Today
Saint-Ludger had 1,074 residents in the 2021 census. The municipal office is on rue Principale, and the community presents itself through schools, library service, parks, sports facilities, family programming and local organizations. The municipal slogan, “Grandir ensemble à St-Ludger,” fits the current feel: a place organized around residents, children, recreation and civic services.
The landscape feels like a bridge between Estrie and Beauce: farms, maple woods, small industry, river corridors and residential streets all sit close together. Visitors get the clearest sense of place by using the village centre first, then adding short rural-road views.

These are resident facilities, so confirm hours and rules before planning a stop. Saint-Ludger also works as a quiet connector for travellers moving between Beauce and the Eastern Townships. Build the stop around the village, the park and a short country-road loop rather than trying to turn it into a long attraction circuit.
