Saint-Lazare-de-Bellechasse is a Chaudière-Appalaches municipality in Quebec’s Chaudière-Appalaches region, about 30 minutes from Lévis. It is the administrative centre of the MRC de Bellechasse, with village services, panoramic upland roads, local parks and Route 279 access.
The community is best understood as a Bellechasse service village on higher ground. It has a civic role beyond its size, but the travel experience is still local: roads, views, recreation spaces and parish history.
How Saint-Lazare-de-Bellechasse Started
Saint-Lazare’s own municipal portrait says the story reaches back to 1830, when colonists from several concessions of the Seigneurie de Livaudière asked for a new parish because they were too far from the church for services and religious instruction.
On April 24, 1831, 36 parishioners from the heights of Saint-Gervais gathered at notary Roy’s house and requested the canonical erection of a parish under the invocation of Saint-Lazare. The Commission de toponymie records the parish as canonically erected in 1832 and identifies the former Saint-Lazare territory with the Livaudière seigneurial area.
The longer name also has a postal and municipal history. The post office opened as Saint-Lazare in 1855 and became Saint-Lazare-de-Bellechasse in 1879. The municipality took that name in 1994.

Saint-Lazare-de-Bellechasse had 1,332 residents in the 2021 census. The municipality presents itself as a community of about 1,200 residents with roughly 40 businesses, day-care services, a developed park and a central role in the MRC de Bellechasse.
Its setting is part of the appeal. The municipal profile describes a panoramic site on the heights of the village, while the Commission de toponymie notes the central position within Bellechasse. That helps explain why the community carries administrative services for the surrounding municipalities.

The Bellechasse context matters too. Saint-Damien-de-Buckland, Saint-Gervais, Armagh and Lévis-area routes can extend a day, while Saint-Lazare itself provides the civic centre and a quieter stop between them.
