The Rich History of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec

The history of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier dates back to 1647 when Robert Giffard de Moncel was granted the Saint-Gabriel seignory. This property later became the possession of the Jesuits in 1667 and eventually Crown property in 1800.

The settlement of Val-Cartier began around 1816 when John Neilson, along with Andrew Stuart and Louis Moquin, Quebec lawyers, obtained approximately 50 concessions in the Saint-Gabriel seignory. This marked the beginning of a settlement intended to welcome Irish and Scottish colonizers.

In 1832, the Parish of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier was formed, detaching from Sainte-Catherine(-de-la-Jacques-Cartier) and Charlesbourg. The Municipality of Valcartier was created in 1845, only to be abolished two years later. The Parish Municipality of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier was officially established in 1855, and then divided in 1862 into two municipalities: Saint-Gabriel-Ouest and Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier. These two municipalities were merged again in 1985 to form the current municipality of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier.
