Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Quebec: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Saint-Étienne-des-Grès is a Mauricie parish municipality on the Saint-Maurice River side of the region, between Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan along Autoroute 55. It is a rural community with highway access, a village core, municipal parks and a useful position for travellers moving between river-country stops and La Mauricie National Park.

The community’s appeal is understated and useful. A visit connects local history, the Saint-Maurice setting, village recreation spaces and nearby protected landscapes without losing sight of the municipality itself.

How Saint-Étienne-des-Grès Started

Saint-Étienne-des-Grès became a separate parish municipality on April 14, 1859, when it detached from the parish municipality of Trois-Rivières. At that time, it formed part of Saint-Maurice county. The municipal chronology also notes that part of its territory detached in 1954 to become the parish municipality of Saint-Michel-des-Forges.

The community’s later administrative history followed regional changes in Mauricie. On January 1, 1982, Saint-Étienne-des-Grès was transferred to the regional county municipality of Francheville. Today it is part of Maskinongé RCM.

The origin story is rooted in rural parish life, river proximity and the gradual organization of local institutions. Unlike mining or railway towns, Saint-Étienne-des-Grès reads as a farming and river-edge municipality whose location between larger centres became increasingly important as roads improved.

What Saint-Étienne-des-Grès Is Like Today

Statistics Canada counted 4,568 residents in Saint-Étienne-des-Grès in the 2021 census. The municipality describes itself as being along the Saint-Maurice River between Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan, with three Autoroute 55 accesses and a main access road leading toward the village core.

That geography shapes the present-day visit. The community is rural, but it is not remote. Residents and visitors can reach larger Mauricie services quickly, while the village itself still has local parks, municipal facilities, open land and a quieter pace than the cities to either side.

The best short visit stays local before turning to the national park. Parc des Grès and other municipal green spaces give families and drivers a practical stop, while the Saint-Maurice corridor explains the community’s place between Trois-Rivières, Shawinigan and the Mauricie backcountry.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Use the municipal parks first. Saint-Étienne-des-Grès maintains parks and green spaces, including Parc des Grès, with recreation infrastructure that suits a short family stop, local sports visit or picnic-style break. Check municipal pages for current equipment, field rentals and seasonal rules.

The Saint-Maurice River setting is another reason to slow down. Even when a trip does not involve boating, the river explains the community’s place in the Mauricie landscape and helps travellers understand why the corridor between Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan has long mattered.

For wider outdoor planning, La Mauricie National Park is the major regional anchor. Parks Canada lists access through the Saint-Jean-des-Piles and Saint-Mathieu entrances, and Saint-Étienne-des-Grès can work as a practical road stop before or after a park day. Keep the community visit local, then use the national park for the larger hiking, lake and forest experience.
