The municipality’s own history describes the first colonization as Irish and identifies the early territory as the Canton of Kilkenny. That name came from the Irish city and county of Kilkenny and belonged to the township proclaimed in 1832.
Saint-Calixte developed from part of Saint-Lin. A mission was present by 1851, the Township Municipality of Kilkenny was created in 1855, and the parish was canonically erected in 1880. The current name came later, replacing the Kilkenny municipal name in the 20th century.
The local economy grew through agriculture, forestry and recreation. The municipality’s history connects the 20th century with a shift toward vacation properties and tourism, a pattern still easy to see in the lakes, campgrounds and seasonal traffic.
