Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle is a parish municipality in Quebec’s Montérégie, south of Montreal near the United States border. It is a farm municipality, a parish village and a major border-route landscape shaped by Autoroute 15 and the Blackpool crossing area.

The best visit connects the parish centre, Saint-Bernard church heritage, Parc Régional St-Bernard and the practical reality of travelling near one of Quebec’s busiest international routes.

How Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle Started

The municipality’s official site says Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle was established in 1855. The parish name honours Bernard-Claude Panet, the 12th archbishop of Quebec, while Lacolle links the place to the older seigneury name associated with Daniel-Hyacinthe-Marie Lienard de Beaujeu, dit de La Colle.

Parish life gave the settlement its early centre. The provincial heritage record for Eglise de Saint-Bernard notes that the parish was founded in 1842, with a first church that year and a new church built on another site beginning in 1865. The same record connects the building with architect Victor Bourgeau and with Antoine Labelle, who served as priest in Saint-Bernard from 1863 to 1868.

What Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle Is Like Today

Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle had 1,542 residents in the 2021 census. The municipality covers 112.63 square kilometres, according to its official site, and presents itself as “la grande porte du Canada au Québec” because Autoroute 15 crosses the municipality to the United States border.

Agriculture remains important, and the municipal site also names tourism as part of local prosperity. This creates an unusual mix: quiet farm roads, a small parish village, recreation spaces and the constant movement of a border corridor.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Start at the village and church area. Église de Saint-Bernard is a major heritage landmark, with a long construction and restoration history and a setting at the heart of the small linear village. Even when interior access is not available, the church, cemetery and parish landscape give the community a clear visual focus.

Parc Régional St-Bernard is the main recreation anchor named by the municipality and regional tourism material. The park area supports hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and family outdoor time, while the municipal site also lists ball fields, soccer, skating rinks, sliding and a cycling route through the municipality. Check seasonal conditions before planning around winter or trail activities.

Travellers using Autoroute 15 should remember that border traffic can shape timing. Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle is a good local stop when you want a quieter view of the Montérégie borderlands, farm country and parish heritage.
