Pierreville, Quebec: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Pierreville is a river municipality in Quebec’s Centre-du-Québec region, near the Saint-François River, Chenal Tardif and the Lake Saint-Pierre lowlands. It is a small community where church history, river transport, lumber, paddling and nearby Odanak context all shape the visit.

The best way to understand Pierreville is through water. The Saint-François River carried movement, work and settlement, and it still gives travellers the clearest reason to pause.

How Pierreville Started

The Municipality of Pierreville’s history page says the name Pierreville appears in archival documents in 1853. It also links the place to Saint-Thomas-de-Pierreville, whose church project began in the early 1850s on the right bank of the Saint-François River.

River industry was central to growth. The municipal history describes intense log driving on the Saint-François River, with timber coming from far upstream and mills built on Île du Fort. The Chenal Tardif helped hold logs near the mill site, making the island a practical industrial location.

The modern municipality took its current shape in 2001, when Notre-Dame-de-Pierreville, Saint-Thomas-de-Pierreville and Pierreville were merged to create the present municipality.

What Pierreville Is Like Today

Pierreville today is a small municipality of a little over 2,000 residents. It has a village core, river access, local services and a landscape that connects agricultural Centre-du-Québec with the wetlands and waterways around Lake Saint-Pierre.

For travellers, Pierreville is quieter than the larger towns nearby, but it has a strong setting. Its relationship with the Saint-François River, Odanak and Saint-François-du-Lac makes it useful for understanding the lower river landscape.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

La route bleue identifies a Pierreville paddling route on the Saint-François River and Chenal Tardif, describing it as a river outing around private islands. This is the most direct way to experience the local geography, though paddlers should check conditions and skill requirements before going out.

Bonjour Québec lists Location Marine Pierreville as a marina in Centre-du-Québec, with pontoon travel on regional waterways including the Saint-François River, Yamaska, îles de Sorel, Lake Saint-Pierre and the St. Lawrence.

On land, look for the church, village streets and Île du Fort context from the municipal history. Nearby Odanak and Saint-François-du-Lac add cultural and river context, while Lake Saint-Pierre expands the wetland and boating side of a Pierreville visit.
