How Les Coteaux Started
The St. Lawrence corridor has longstanding Indigenous history connected to river travel, portages, fishing and islands. French colonial movement later used the same corridor for trade, military travel and settlement.
Municipal history says Les Coteaux was created in 1994 by grouping Coteau-Landing and Coteau-Station. Coteau-Landing began as a landing and relay place near the river, while Coteau-Station grew around rail service.
The Soulanges Canal later strengthened the transport role of the area. Locks, wharves, rail, roads and river access all helped make this small municipality part of a larger movement corridor between Lake Saint-François, Lake Saint-Louis and the St. Lawrence.
