Dupuy is a small Abitibi-Ouest municipality in Quebec’s Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. It sits west of La Sarre in a landscape shaped by railway settlement, forestry, farming, local parks, sports facilities and the long distances that define travel in northern Abitibi.
How Dupuy Started
Dupuy’s official history says the municipality was founded in 1918 and that the timber trade helped make the settlement possible. The same municipal source notes that the economy has long rested on agriculture and forestry, while the railway gave the village its early position.
The local “d’hier à aujourd’hui” page gives more detail. The first lots were granted in 1912, with early arrivals from Saint-Gabriel-de-Brandon. In 1917 the parish received the Dupuy name in honour of Abbé Dupuy, and Olivier Matte opened the first sawmill in 1918. The Commission de toponymie adds that the older Saint-Jacques-de-Dupuy name became simply Dupuy in 1995.
