The Commission de toponymie traces the Deschaillons name to Pierre de Saint-Ours and the seigneurial history of New France. The name recalls L’Échaillon in Dauphiné, France, connected to the Saint-Ours family background.
The Deschaillons seigneury was granted in the 17th century, and the territory later developed through farming, river movement, parish life and village services. The municipality’s heritage circuit now uses interpretive panels to explain themes such as local history, religious heritage and the present community.
The modern municipality took its current form when Deschaillons and Deschaillons-sur-Saint-Laurent were regrouped in 1990. That is why both old rural and village identities remain part of the local story.
