Chénéville is a Papineau municipality in Quebec’s Outaouais region, east of Lac Simon and north of Montebello-area routes. It is a small village service centre for lake roads, forest country, municipal life, local businesses and travel toward Duhamel, Lac-Simon and the Petite-Nation.
The community is best understood as a crossroads village. Its role is not to compete with the lake resorts around it, but to serve people moving through a rural and cottage-country landscape.
How Chénéville Started
Local history traces Chénéville to mid-19th-century settlement in the Hartwell and Preston area. The first post office opened in 1864 under the name Sévigné, later used the Hartwell name, and became Chénéville in 1884.
The Chénéville name is tied to the Chéné family and to Pierre Hercule Chéné, a regional public figure. In 1903, Chénéville separated from the United Township Municipality of Hartwell-et-Preston to form the Village Municipality of Chénéville. At that time the village was small, with a few streets and homes serving the surrounding countryside.
The present municipality later took in Vinoy, which merged with Chénéville in 1996. That explains why the municipal territory includes both a village core and wider rural areas.
What Chénéville Is Like Today
Chénéville had 848 residents in the 2021 census. It remains part of the Papineau RCM, with municipal services, local shops, community facilities, homes, churches, forest roads and access to nearby lakes.
Tourisme Petite Nation presents Chénéville as one of the municipalities in the Petite-Nation and La Lièvre area. For travellers, the village is practical: a place for food, services, local notices and orientation before continuing toward lake, cottage or forest routes.
That practical role is the main travel value. Chénéville lets visitors reset between rural drives, check local information, and understand how the inland Papineau communities support seasonal lake traffic as well as permanent residents.
