Audet, Quebec: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide
Audet is a rural municipality in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, in the MRC du Granit near Lac-Mégantic and the Route des Sommets. Its identity is tied to St-Hubert-de-Spalding history, maple country, family recreation spaces and a quiet village setting on Rue Principale.
Visitors should approach Audet as a small community with useful local stops, not as a large attraction base. The village, OTJ park, Bain de nature and mountain-road setting give the visit its shape.
How Audet Started
The municipal history says the municipality began as St-Hubert de Spalding. In autumn 1903, ratepayers in the northern part of Spalding Township requested a separate municipality from the United Townships of Ditchfield and Spalding. Incorporation became official on January 1, 1904.
The first council was chosen on January 11, 1904, and the first council meeting followed on February 1. That early civic life was practical and local, with meetings held in Athanase Grondin’s house for a monthly rent of 50 cents.
The name Audet was adopted in 1959. The municipality explains that Audet already identified the post office and school municipality, and that it honoured Michel Audet, a local pioneer and first postmaster.
What Audet Is Like Today
Audet had 708 residents in the 2021 census. Its own logo explanation presents the community as rural, family-oriented and closely tied to nature and maple production.
Local life centres on Rue Principale, the municipal office, community facilities and the recreation spaces around Parc de l’O.T.J. The municipality lists play equipment, a splash pad, petanque, and a concrete rink that can be used year-round for hockey, skating, basketball and other activities.
Audet is also part of the broader Mégantic mountain-country experience. The municipal home page points visitors toward the Route des Sommets, while Mont Gosford and Lac-Mégantic-area services shape many longer itineraries.
Things to Do and Places Nearby
Start at Parc de l’O.T.J. on Rue de l’O.T.J. It is the most visible local recreation area and a useful stop for families when facilities are open.
The Bain de nature d’Audet sits beside the municipal office at 238 Rue Principale. It is part of a regional effort to encourage low-impact forest immersion and gives travellers a specific public nature anchor inside the community.
Audet also lists the pedestrian path “Les mots d’enfants.” For a larger outdoor day, use Audet as one stop on the Route des Sommets or a Lac-Mégantic/Mont Gosford loop, then return to the village for a short local pause.
