Pituamkek National Park Reserve is a newly established Parks Canada place in northwestern Epekwitk, also known as Prince Edward Island, near Lennox Island First Nation. Parks Canada says the establishment agreement was signed on July 4, 2024, creating Canada's 48th national park. The reserve protects a landscape also known in English as Hog Island and the Sandhills.
This is not a normal trip-planning page yet. Parks Canada currently says Pituamkek is not ready to receive visitors, so the right use of this page is to understand the place, follow official updates, and avoid treating it like an open day-use or camping destination.
Pituamkek is important for both cultural and ecological reasons. Parks Canada describes it as a sacred place with deep significance for the Epekwitnewaq Mi'kmaq, and the reserve was established through collaboration involving the Mi'kmaq Nation Government of P.E.I., L'nuey, Parks Canada, Island Nature Trust, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and the Province of Prince Edward Island.
The protected landscape includes coastal dune systems, old-growth forest, unique geology, and long-standing Mi'kmaq connections to land and resource use. That makes this page different from the park pages built around trails, beaches, and camping: the main travel value right now is context, not itinerary building.
Do not plan a visitor itinerary here until Parks Canada publishes visitor access details. Watch the official source for future guidance on access, permitted activities, stewardship expectations, visitor services, and safety.
The page is still valuable for travellers building a PEI parks itinerary because it explains why this area matters and how the national park reserve is expected to contribute to protected areas in Prince Edward Island.
Parks Canada currently states that Pituamkek National Park Reserve is not yet ready to receive visitors. Check the official source before making any access assumptions, and use nearby open Parks Canada places, provincial parks, and local tourism resources for active trip planning in the meantime.
