How Dorchester Started
Dorchester developed in the former Township of North Dorchester, a rural municipality shaped by agriculture, settlement roads and the Thames River watershed. Thames Centre’s official plan records that the current municipality was created on January 1, 2001 by amalgamating the former municipalities of North Dorchester and West Nissouri.
Local heritage in Thames Centre is preserved through community records, designated properties and the two-volume Toil, Tragedy and Triumph 1800-2000 heritage book set. The municipality points residents and researchers toward that collection for family stories, photographs and settlement history.
The community’s modern name and identity are tied to Dorchester Road, Hamilton Road, the former township and the village centre that grew as a residential and service area east of London.

Start with Mill Pond Trail. Thames Centre’s trail material identifies it as a two-kilometre walk around the pond, with views of water and surrounding vegetation. It is the most distinctive local walk.
Dorchester Community Park and the FlightExec Centre work well for families. The park area includes outdoor recreation features such as sport fields, pool and splash pad amenities, a paved walking trail, playground and skateboard park.
