The township of Alfred and Plantagenet was officially formed on January 1, 1997. This formation was a result of the amalgamation of Alfred Township, Alfred Village, North Plantagenet Township, and Plantagenet Village. The name 'Plantagenet' is derived from the royal house established by King Henry II. The area was initially settled in 1811-12 and has been a thriving community since the establishment of its post office in 1838.
Near the town of Alfred, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has designated the Alfred Bog as "a provincially significant wetland and an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest." This area is home to a variety of unique species, including the palm warbler, northern pitcher-plant, pink lady's-slipper, cottongrass, bog elfin and bog copper butterflies, and the ebony boghaunter dragonfly. The bog also hosts one of the most southerly herds of moose. Visitors can explore this natural wonder via a 272-metre boardwalk, perfect for nature walks.
