Nahanni National Park Reserve | Northwest Territories

Nahanni National Park Reserve is one of Canada's landmark wilderness parks. Parks Canada identifies it as a 30,000 square kilometre UNESCO World Heritage Site with wild rivers, plateaus, peaks, and Náįlįcho, also known as Virginia Falls, where the South Nahanni River drops about twice the height of Niagara Falls.

The park reserve is also part of Dehcho First Nations homeland, with a long Dene presence in and around the area. A Nahanni trip is usually built around river travel, flightseeing, alpine terrain, or a combination of outfitted wilderness experiences.

Why Visit Nahanni for Waterfalls & Hiking

Nahanni is for travellers who want a major northern wilderness experience: river expeditions, flightseeing, remote mountain routes, granite spires, deep canyons, and cultural interpretation. Parks Canada highlights Nahanni river trips, day flights, and alpine experiences as key ways to encounter the park reserve.

It is also a place where logistics matter. Overnight trips require a reservation, and visitors need to plan for charters, outfitters, weather, river hazards, bears, wildfire, emergency response, and remote communications.

Things To Do: Waterfalls & Hiking

Plan around South Nahanni River trips, Little Nahanni River or Flat River paddling for experienced groups, flightseeing to major landmarks, alpine trekking in the Ragged Range, camping, photography, and cultural learning. Parks Canada maintains current information for reservations, fees, charters and outfitters, weather, safety, river difficulty, wildfire, and rescue capability.

Nahanni's scale makes it tempting to dream big, but the itinerary should match group skill and current conditions. River hazards, bears, fire, aircraft logistics, and weather can all change the plan.
