Kippens, Newfoundland and Labrador: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Kippens is a west-coast town in Newfoundland and Labrador’s Western region, on Route 460 between Stephenville and the Port au Port Peninsula. Its local story is shaped by Bay St. George, Romaine’s River, Mi’kmaq and Acadian history, residential neighbourhoods, town recreation facilities and easy access to wider regional services.

For travellers, Kippens is a quiet community stop rather than a high-volume attraction centre. A realistic visit connects the town’s heritage page, the recreation complex, the shoreline and Route 460 travel between Stephenville and Port au Port.

How Kippens Started

The Town of Kippens says the name is commonly linked to Captain George Kippen, an English sea captain, though the details are uncertain. Local tradition connects him with the river now known as Romaine’s River, which was once called Kippens River.

The town’s heritage page also places Kippens within a much older Bay St. George setting. It notes Mi’kmaq presence before European settlement, Acadian influence after the Acadian Expulsion, and Captain James Cook’s mid-18th-century charting of the region.

Benoit First Nation’s regional history page gives additional context for Kippens and Bay St. George, noting French and later English fishing activity as well as Indigenous use of the area. This layered history places Kippens on a coast where Indigenous, French, Acadian, English and later municipal stories overlap.

What Kippens Is Like Today

Statistics Canada counted 1,842 residents in Kippens in the 2021 census. The town is mainly residential, with local government, fire services, recreation programming, community events and access to Stephenville for larger shopping, airport, health and school services.

The Town of Kippens describes maintained trails around the Kippens Recreational Complex, plus facilities such as a soccer pitch, softball field, tennis court, basketball courts, dog park, community garden, beach volleyball court, playgrounds, a community centre and campground. Kippens also shares regional recreation assets with Stephenville, including the Stephenville Dome, Regional Aquatic Centre and YMCA.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Start with the Kippens heritage material before walking or driving through town. Romaine’s River, local roads and the Route 460 setting make more sense when the name story and Bay St. George background are in mind.

The recreation complex is the main local activity area. Its short forested trail network is modest, but it gives visitors a direct look at how the town uses its public space. Seasonal events such as Canada Day, winter carnival and Kippens Rec programming are mainly community-focused, so confirm dates and whether activities are public before planning around them.

Kippens also works as a calm base for short drives to Stephenville, Port au Port East and the Port au Port Peninsula. Keep the Kippens stop local first: heritage, river names, recreation facilities and west-coast residential life.
