Nigadoo is a coastal community in Belle-Baie, New Brunswick, in the Acadian Coastal region. It sits between Beresford and Petit-Rocher, close to Bathurst, with the Nigadoo River, beach access and Parc du Vieux Moulin shaping the visitor story.
The community’s identity is local and coastal: Mi’gmaq place-name history, Acadian settlement, a former village incorporated in 1967, and a present-day role as one sector of Belle-Baie.
How Nigadoo Started
Tourism New Brunswick says the Mi’gmaq had discovered the natural shelter offered by the banks of the river before Acadians arrived in the region, and named the place Nigadoo, meaning hiding place or refuge.
The former municipal site gives the same origin in French and adds the public symbol layer. It says the village flag was created in 2021 in partnership with Pabineau First Nation, with design elements representing Acadian identity, the old mill wheel, the sea and a feather.
Nigadoo later developed as a village on the Chaleur coast. Tourism New Brunswick says it was incorporated in 1967 and is home to more than 1,000 inhabitants. Belle-Baie’s current history page records the next municipal shift: on January 1, 2023, Belle-Baie was created by combining Beresford, Nigadoo, Petit-Rocher, Pointe-Verte and surrounding local service districts.
What Nigadoo Is Like Today
Nigadoo is now part of Belle-Baie, a municipality that describes itself as rooted in Acadian heritage, with French as its working language. Belle-Baie also identifies nature, culture, festivals, arts, small business and sustainable growth as part of the wider town identity.
Nigadoo’s own visitor identity remains more specific. Tourism New Brunswick describes it as a residential and vacation community with camping, parks, playgrounds, walking trails, a fish market, motel, crafts and restaurants.
The Nigadoo River is the main landscape feature. The former municipal site calls the river a place for swimming and fishing, and Tourism New Brunswick points visitors to a scenic lookout with beach access and views that change with the tide.
