Hillsborough, New Brunswick: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Hillsborough is a former village in southeastern New Brunswick, in the Fundy Coastal region. It is now part of Fundy Albert, and its visitor identity is built around railway history, Confederation-era heritage, wetlands, trails and a seasonal visitor information centre on Main Street.

This is one of Albert County’s most practical small-community stops. A visit can include the New Brunswick Railway Museum, the Honourable William Henry Steeves House Museum, the wetlands park, walking trails, mountain biking trails, artisan kiosks and Fundy Albert visitor services.

How Hillsborough Started

Hillsborough’s visitor history is strongly tied to rail, gypsum and Albert County industry. The Canadian Register of Historic Places says the New Brunswick Railway Museum is associated with the railway history of Hillsborough and New Brunswick, and that the Salisbury and Albert Railway reached Hillsborough station in 1877.

The same heritage record reaches even further back into transport history. It notes that the Hillsborough Plaister and Rail Road Company was incorporated in 1851 and operated wooden-railed, horse-drawn tramways that moved albertite from Albert Mines and gypsum from quarries to the Petitcodiac River for export.

The railway museum keeps that story visible. Its own website describes the museum as the leading railway museum in New Brunswick, located in Hillsborough, with a collection of railway artefacts and a project of the Canadian Railroad Historical Association’s New Brunswick Division.

Hillsborough also has a Confederation connection through Steeves House Museum. The museum says the original house was finished in 1812, that William Henry Steeves was born there in 1814, and that he became a Father of Confederation and later a senator.

What Hillsborough Is Like Today

Hillsborough now sits inside Fundy Albert, but it remains a clear visitor service point. Fundy Albert lists a seasonal Visitor Information Centre at 2861 Main Street, beside the Artisan Village, with summer dates and daily hours.

Tourism New Brunswick presents Hillsborough as home to the New Brunswick Railway Museum and Steeves House Museum, and also points visitors to the wetlands park, walking trails, mountain biking trails and the Artisan Village’s local crafters.

The village core is useful because several stops are close together. Main Street gives travellers heritage sites, visitor information, artisan shopping and practical services without needing to build the day around a long drive between each stop.

Hillsborough’s setting also works as a Fundy Albert planning base. The community is inland from the Bay of Fundy coast but close enough to connect heritage time with broader Albert County travel, especially when the visitor centre is open.

The seasonal visitor centre is especially practical for first-time Albert County travel. Fundy Albert lists the Hillsborough location next to the Artisan Village, with summer daily hours, so it can serve as the first stop for maps, current road information, attraction hours and local suggestions before museums or trails.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Start with the New Brunswick Railway Museum. The Canadian Register describes rolling stock, tracks, an original section shed and a museum building with railway artefacts, and the museum website explains its role in preserving New Brunswick railway history.

Visit Steeves House Museum for the Confederation layer. The museum offers guided tours, period rooms, grounds and genealogy records connected to Albert County surnames. Its house story is specific enough to make Hillsborough more than a general heritage stop.

Use the wetlands park and trails for outdoor time. Tourism New Brunswick lists walking trails and mountain biking trails, giving Hillsborough a museum visit and a short outdoor break in the same community.

Stop at the Artisan Village when it is operating. Tourism New Brunswick places it beside the Visitor Information Centre and describes it as a place for local crafters, making it a natural Main Street add-on after visitor information or museum time.

If rail history is the main reason for visiting, leave enough time for the Canadian Register details to make sense on site. The museum property includes tracks, rolling stock, railway artefacts and a section shed, while the heritage record connects the place to gypsum, albertite and the branch line that linked Hillsborough with wider New Brunswick transport history.

Travel Notes

Hillsborough is easiest by car. Check Fundy Albert for visitor centre dates and hours, then confirm museum schedules before building a day around tours.

Summer is the easiest season for the visitor centre, artisan stops and museum access. Trails can extend the visit into shoulder seasons, but weather and surface conditions should be checked before walking or riding.

If time is limited, keep the plan compact: visitor centre, railway museum, Steeves House Museum, a short trail or wetland stop, then Main Street services before leaving.

For families, Hillsborough works best when the day mixes indoor and outdoor stops. A museum-heavy morning can be balanced with the wetlands park, Main Street browsing and visitor-centre advice before continuing through Fundy Albert.
