Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Blacks Harbour is a Bay of Fundy fishing community in southwestern New Brunswick, now part of the Municipality of Eastern Charlotte. It sits in the Fundy Coastal region, with seafood plants, ferry traffic, harbour views and Pea Point nature preserve giving the community its travel identity.

The village is small, but it has a clear role: it is a working harbour, a seafood place and the mainland ferry point for Grand Manan Island.

How Blacks Harbour Started

Blacks Harbour grew around the Bay of Fundy shore, where fishing, processing, boat movement and harbour access shaped the community. The Blacks Harbour Heritage Museum describes village life on the Bay of Fundy, the early Connors brothers, the sardine factory and the fishing carrier fleet.

The museum places the community’s establishment in 1866 and the Connors Bros. sardine-factory story in the late 1800s. Tourism New Brunswick now presents the same broad identity through seafood companies, Fundy water and the harbour’s continuing working role.

Municipally, Blacks Harbour became part of Eastern Charlotte on January 1, 2023. The current municipal site identifies Eastern Charlotte as the result of local-government reform that joined Blacks Harbour, St. George and surrounding areas under one council.

What Blacks Harbour Is Like Today

Blacks Harbour still feels like a working place before it feels like a resort. Tourism New Brunswick points to the Bay of Fundy, Connors Bros., Clover Leaf Seafoods and Cooke Aquaculture as part of the community’s identity.

The ferry terminal is central to how travellers use the community. Tourism New Brunswick lists daily Coastal Transport sailings from Blacks Harbour to Grand Manan Island, which means visitors often pass through for ferry staging, supplies or a short harbour stop before departure.

The shoreline setting adds a quieter side. Pea Point and the surrounding Fundy coast give walkers, birders and photographers a reason to slow down before the community becomes only a ferry lineup in their memory.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Start with the ferry context. Even if you are staying on the mainland, the Grand Manan ferry terminal helps explain why Blacks Harbour matters to regional travel.

The Blacks Harbour Heritage Museum is the strongest local history stop when open. It focuses on fishing-village life, the Connors brothers, the sardine factory, local sports and community memories.

For outdoor time, use the Connors Bros. Nature Preserve at Pea Point. The Nature Trust of New Brunswick places it on Wallace Cove Road next to the ferry terminal and describes coastal habitat in the Fundy Coast eco-district.
