Reston, Manitoba: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Reston is a western Manitoba community in the Western Region, within the Rural Municipality of Pipestone. It is a small agricultural service centre with Memorial Park, a local museum, golf, camping and a practical location near Saskatchewan and North Dakota routes.

Reston works best as a rural road stop rather than a packed attraction list. Its value for travellers is in local history, park space, services and a quiet overnight option near the west side of the province.

How Reston Started

Reston developed in the RM of Pipestone as farms, railways, schools, churches and small businesses spread across southwestern Manitoba. Manitoba Historical Society community records identify Reston as an unincorporated village in the RM of Pipestone.

The Pipestone district grew through agricultural settlement and local trade. Reston became the largest community in the rural municipality, serving surrounding farms and smaller settlements with stores, institutions, recreation and road access.

Local heritage is preserved through the Reston Museum and Memorial Park. These spaces keep the focus on pioneer families, agriculture, military service and community memory rather than a single founding monument.

What Reston Is Like Today

Statistics Canada counted 659 residents in Reston in 2021. The RM of Pipestone describes the community as having medical, ambulance, fire and policing services, plus parks, recreation and local business growth.

The town centre is compact, and visitors can understand the community quickly. Memorial Park, the museum, campground, golf course and main street services cover most traveller needs.

Reston is also useful geographically. It sits in southwestern Manitoba, close enough to border-country routes to work as a rest stop or overnight base during longer prairie drives.

The community is not large, so the best visit is simple: park, museum, golf, campground and main street services. That scale is part of the appeal for travellers who want a quiet stop with enough facilities to be useful.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Start at Reston Memorial Park. The RM describes it as a landscaped park with a cenotaph, picnic area, playground and tennis courts, used for summer celebrations and community recreation.

The Reston Museum is also in the park. The municipality says it displays antiques, collectibles and agricultural items donated by pioneers from the surrounding area, and it is generally open in July and August.

The golf course west of town adds a second recreation stop, with a 9-hole grass-green course, driving range and clubhouse. A serviced campground beside the golf course offers both serviced and unserviced sites, tenting areas, washrooms and a trailer dumping station.
