How Plum Coulee Started
The Manitoba Historical Society says Plum Coulee was named for its location near the Plum River and a growth of plum trees. The community incorporated as a village in 1901 and later became a town in 2000.
The wider Rhineland area is part of Manitoba’s Mennonite settlement landscape. The former Rural Municipality of Rhineland took its name from the Rhine valley in western Germany, and the surrounding district developed around farms, villages, churches, schools, railways and agricultural service centres.
Municipal structure changed in 2015, when Plum Coulee, Gretna and the Rural Municipality of Rhineland amalgamated into the present Municipality of Rhineland. Plum Coulee now functions as a local urban district within that municipality.
