Minitonas is a Swan Valley community in Manitoba’s Parkland Region, inside the Municipality of Minitonas-Bowsman. It sits east of Swan River and north of Duck Mountain country, with a settlement story tied to Cowan Trail, Tent Town, railway relocation, agriculture and forestry.

How Minitonas Started
The Municipality of Minitonas-Bowsman says the Cowan Trail was blazed from Dauphin to Minitonas in 1897. A tent campsite was established on the West Favel River southwest of the present community in 1898, then the settlement moved to its current railway site.
The original Tent Town is still marked. The Manitoba Historical Society records a public-campground monument erected in 1967 to commemorate the pioneer tent town that stood near Minitonas between 1898 and 1899.
Municipal history records the RM of Minitonas as incorporated in 1901, the Village of Minitonas in 1948 and town status in 1996. In 2015, the RM of Minitonas, Town of Minitonas and Village of Bowsman amalgamated into the present municipality.
What Minitonas Is Like Today
Statistics Canada counted 465 residents in Minitonas in 2021. The municipality describes agriculture and forestry as the two main industries, with a Louisiana-Pacific OSB mill in the wider Minitonas area and local services including school, store, bank, library, post office, hotel and liquor vendor.
For travellers, Minitonas is quieter than Swan River but useful. It has recreation facilities, parks, trails, sports grounds and a road connection toward Duck Mountain Provincial Park by PR 366.
Things to Do and Places Nearby
Start with the Tent Town monument west of the community. It gives the clearest link between present-day Minitonas and the temporary settlement that served newcomers before the railway townsite became permanent.
In town, use the East Favel River hiking trail, playgrounds, arena, ball diamonds and sports grounds. These are local recreation spaces rather than major attractions, but they make Minitonas a realistic stop for families or road travellers.
Duck Mountain Provincial Park is the larger outdoor draw south of Minitonas. Use official park information for camping, fishing, road conditions and seasonal access. The Cowan Trail history also helps explain why this valley and mountain-edge route mattered.
