Holland, Manitoba: History, Things to Do and Travel Guide

Holland is a rural service community in Manitoba’s Central Manitoba region, at the junction of PTH 2 and PR 34 in the Rural Municipality of Victoria. It is a small stop with municipal offices, a campground, local recreation, a windmill landmark and Tiger Hills country close by.

The best visit is simple: use Holland as a rest stop, campground stop or local-recreation stop while travelling between prairie towns. Windmill Park, the agricultural grounds and the municipal history material give the town enough context for a useful pause.

How Holland Started

The RM of Victoria’s place-name page says Holland was named after A. C. Holland, the first postmaster. The municipality also connects the wider area to older routes through the Cypress River and Tiger Hills country, with written records of European crossings appearing in the early 1800s.

Holland developed as the administrative centre for the Rural Municipality of Victoria. Its location at the highway junction made it a service point for nearby farms, rural residents and travellers moving through south-central Manitoba.

Community identity later produced the windmill landmark. The RM says the Holland Chamber of Commerce started the windmill project in 2000 to capitalize on the town’s name, with volunteer labour building the 42-foot structure in 2002.

What Holland Is Like Today

Statistics Canada counted 354 residents in Holland in 2021. The RM office is on Broadway Street, and municipal pages list local services, library access, recreation programming, community development, agricultural grounds and event information.

For travellers, Holland is practical rather than busy. It has road access, community facilities, a campground at the agricultural grounds, Windmill Park and Puttin on the Prairies mini-golf, and a small-town base for Tiger Hills Recreation programming.

Things to Do and Places Nearby

Start at Windmill Park. The RM lists walking paths, an off-leash dog park, washroom, tourism booth, dump station and a 19-hole mini-golf course. The windmill’s volunteer-built origin makes it a more local landmark than a generic roadside prop.

The Holland and District Agricultural Society grounds are useful for overnight or event travel. The RM describes 40 campsites with electrical and water service, washrooms, showers, race track, recreation centre, ball diamonds and rental barns.

For current activities, check Tiger Hills Recreation through the RM of Victoria. The recreation district coordinates leisure programming for Holland, Cypress River and surrounding municipalities. Travellers should also look for local events before assuming facilities are open.
