How Gillam Started
The Town of Gillam traces early settlement in the area to 1912 and 1913 at Mile 330, east of the present townsite. Railway workers and families lived there while construction reached Kettle Rapids on the Nelson River and crews began work on a bridge.
The town history also records Swampy Cree presence in the Gillam area before the railway. People trapped over a wide area, fished the Nelson River and used settlements along the rail line for supplies as the fur trade and railway altered local movement.
Modern Gillam grew quickly in the 1960s when hydroelectric development on the lower Nelson River brought large construction workforces and new services. Kettle Generating Station increased the population dramatically, and later Long Spruce and Limestone generating stations reinforced the town’s role in Manitoba’s northern power system.

Statistics Canada counted 1,007 residents in Gillam in 2021. The town covers a large municipal area, but the built community is compact, with the recreation centre, school, airport, rail station, shops, public offices and residential areas clustered around town services.
Gillam’s visitor rhythm follows northern work schedules and outdoor seasons. People arrive for Hydro-related work, rail travel, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, paddling, family visits and travel onward to Churchill. The town’s own tourism material emphasizes lakes, rivers, streams and trophy fishing in the surrounding area.

Start with the Gillam Recreation Centre. The Town lists a theatre, children’s play structure, youth centre, skating and curling rinks, wellness centre, library, gymnasium and rentable spaces under one roof. The Nelson River Aquatic Centre is behind the recreation centre.
For outdoor time, use official local advice before choosing a lake, trail or launch. The Town lists Stephens Lake about 10 minutes from town, with a marina and campground, and also notes Pumphouse Beach, community parks, playgrounds, canoeing, fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
