How Elie Started
The RM of Cartier records that Elie began in 1890 as a flag stop on the Canadian Northern Railway. The early place name was “De Tank” because steam engines used the water tank there. Other names circulated, including Patenaude and Dufresne, but the official post office name became Elie on August 1, 1898.
The same municipal history explains why the name settled. Dufresne caused confusion because another place east of Winnipeg was already known by that name, so Elie became the official choice. Some records connect the name to Elie Chamberlain, while many local accounts connect it to Elie Dufresne, who helped develop the first church, convent and school.
Cartier itself was incorporated as a rural municipality in 1914 after the former RM of St. Francois Xavier was divided along the Assiniboine River. Elie remained one of the municipality’s central places because it had the rail stop, post office, church and later municipal services.
What Elie Is Like Today
Elie is recognized as a local urban district in the RM of Cartier. The municipal office is in town, and the community has schools, recreation facilities, churches, small businesses, health services and highway-oriented stops for people travelling west from Winnipeg.
Statistics Canada counted 705 residents in Elie in 2021. The number is small, but the community serves a larger rural area that includes farms, river lots, Hutterite colonies, commuters and neighbouring localities. For travellers, that means Elie has more day-to-day services than some nearby hamlets.

Start at Joseph Legault Memorial Heritage Park. The Manitoba Historical Society notes that the park opened in 2000 and includes plaques connected to Joseph Ulric Legault, Earl Vincent “Bud” Fossay and a restored 1923 Hi-way Patrol grader once used by the municipality.
Elie’s most visible history is not a museum complex but the way the community sits around railway, highway and municipal service functions. A short walk or drive through town gives context for the church, municipal office, businesses and recreation grounds that still keep the place active.
