The Manitoba Historical Society’s Blumenort history describes the village as founded in August 1874 by 140 men, women and children of the Kleine Gemeinde, or Small Church Mennonites. These Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonite settlers came from the Russian Empire and recreated a village pattern rooted in agrarian life, church community and separation from outside pressures.
Blumenort’s name is German and is commonly understood as “flower place.” The early settlement was a street village, with farms and community life organized in a way familiar to Mennonite migrants. Over time, the original village form changed as families dispersed onto farms and later development shifted toward the present community location.
