Winfield is a neighbourhood ward in Lake Country, in British Columbia’s Thompson Okanagan region. It sits in the Okanagan corridor between Kelowna and Vernon, close to Wood Lake, orchards, parks, wineries and the civic services of the District of Lake Country.
For travellers, Winfield is best understood as Lake Country’s central service area rather than a separate incorporated town. It gives easy access to lake days, farm-gate stops, wine touring, local parks and Okanagan road travel without the scale of the larger cities nearby.
How Winfield Started
The District of Lake Country traces Winfield’s name to Thomas Wood, who bought 160 acres and started Winfield Ranch in 1871. Settlers arrived through the 1890s, when the first telephone, fruit trees and church services appeared around Winfield Lodge.
The first post office opened in 1909, and a school followed in 1910 near the site of today’s Winfield Memorial Hall. The district notes that the name Winfield was officially chosen in 1920 after Wood’s ranch. In 1995, Winfield became one of the four ward communities within the newly incorporated District of Lake Country, alongside Carr’s Landing, Okanagan Centre and Oyama.
What Winfield Is Like Today
Winfield is now part of a fast-growing Okanagan municipality, so its population is not reported here as a separate town figure. Lake Country describes itself as a community of connected neighbourhoods with lakes, mountains, orchards, vineyards and nearly half its land in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
