Sun Peaks is a mountain resort municipality in British Columbia’s Thompson-Okanagan region, built around ski slopes, alpine village streets, summer trails and a high-elevation setting northeast of Kamloops. It is small by population, but it functions as a year-round resort community with a very different rhythm from most rural B.C. villages.
How Sun Peaks Started
The area was known for skiing before it became a municipality. Tod Mountain opened as a ski area in the 1960s, drawing winter visitors to a mountain that had already been used by skiers and outdoor travellers. The resort expanded over time, and the Sun Peaks name eventually replaced the older Tod Mountain identity as new lifts, accommodations and village services were added.
Municipal status came later. Sun Peaks became a mountain resort municipality, which gave the community a formal local government while keeping the resort landscape at its centre. That sequence explains the place today: lifts, trails, village streets and tourism infrastructure came first, followed by a growing permanent community.
What Sun Peaks Is Like Today
Today Sun Peaks is both a resort and a municipality. Winter brings ski traffic, snow-school activity and a busy village base. Summer changes the focus to mountain biking, hiking, golf, festivals and alpine wildflower routes. Residents, seasonal workers and visitors share a compact village where the resort layout is easy to read on foot.
The community’s small population can be misleading. During peak seasons, Sun Peaks feels much larger than its census number. In quieter periods, it settles into a mountain-town pace, with local businesses, municipal services and resident routines working around resort operations.
Things to Do and Places Nearby
Most visits begin in the village base. From there, travellers can reach ski lifts, walking routes, bike terrain, restaurants, shops and event spaces without much driving. In winter, the mountain terrain is the main draw. In summer, hiking and mountain biking give the same slopes a different purpose.
Leave time to understand the community beyond the lift map. The municipal setting, compact streets and high-elevation neighbourhoods show how Sun Peaks has grown from a ski area into a year-round settlement. Kamloops is the larger service centre for the region, but Sun Peaks itself is the destination, especially when snow conditions, trail openings or events are strong.
Travellers should also pay attention to the shoulder seasons. Spring and fall can be quieter, with some resort services reduced while municipal life continues. Those periods are useful for seeing Sun Peaks as a community as well as as a ski or bike destination.
