Plan Sydney Inlet Park in Clayoquot Sound with boat or floatplane access, sea kayaking, ocean swimming, fishing, hunting, old-growth forest, and salmon estuary.
Sydney Inlet Park is in northern Clayoquot Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, between Hesquiat Lake and Pretty Girl Lake. BC Parks describes one of the finest fjord examples on Vancouver Island, suited to sea kayaking and pleasure boating.
Access is by boat or floatplane.
Why Visit Sydney Inlet Park
Sydney Inlet is an undeveloped wilderness park for experienced marine travellers. The park protects old-growth Sitka spruce and Douglas-fir forest, portions of the Sydney River, and the Sydney River estuary.
The estuary supports four salmon species, including a notable chinook population, while BC Parks also notes rare and unusual flora and fauna. Visitors come for fjord scenery, quiet kayaking, ocean swimming, fishing in Clayoquot Sound, and hunting during open seasons where regulations allow.
Things To Do
Sea kayak, pleasure boat, swim in the ocean without a designated swimming area or lifeguards, fish for salmon, rockfish, halibut, and lingcod under current federal and provincial rules, hunt during open seasons, and observe old-growth and estuary wildlife from a distance.
Planning Notes
Canoeing is not recommended. Boaters should use marine chart 3674 and plan around remote Clayoquot Sound weather, tides, cold water, exposure, and self-rescue. Nearby communities include Tofino, Ucluelet, Hot Springs Village, and Ahousat. Check Fisheries and Oceans Canada regulations before fishing, avoid disturbing Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation heritage sites, and pack out all waste. Carry drinking water, a tide table, spare warm layers, and a conservative float plan because facilities are not listed for this wilderness park area today either.
